As I mentioned when discussing the 5 Best Full-Size Keyboards for Bookkeepers, it’s important for bookkeepers to have good quality equipment. The same is true for a mouse. Good quality doesn’t mean picking out the most expensive one you can find. It means finding a mouse that’s comfortable to use and has the features you want.

Upgrading your mouse can have a significant impact on your productivity as a bookkeeper. A high-quality mouse can improve your accuracy and reduce the strain on your hand and wrist. Additionally, features such as programmable buttons and scroll wheels can help you navigate through documents and spreadsheets more efficiently.

Here are a few recommendations. I’ll start with my personal favourite but also list a few others that have interesting features I thought some of you might enjoy.

Logitech MX Master 3s

It’s hard to write about peripherals without mentioning Logitech. They aren’t the only ones making great keyboards and mice, but they’re usually a safe bet if you don’t know which one to buy.

The Logitech MX Master 3s is the latest version of my favourite mouse. I owned the original, and I’m currently working with the 3. For me, there are a few key reasons I’ve been using them for years and why I think bookkeepers would appreciate the upgrade.

The best Bluetooth mouse to reduce muscle strain

I haven’t tried either of these two before, but I love the look. I know a lot of people, especially those who suffer from RSI issues, swear by these as a way to reduce the pain of working with a mouse for a full workday.

Logitech MX Ergo

The trackball mouse is one I’ve always wanted to try but just haven’t purchased it yet. If you have any RSI issues or simply want to avoid them, this is the way to go. I think you’d have some initial mental retraining to get used to moving the cursor with the trackball, but after that, the benefits are obvious. I chose the MX Ergo to go with the other MX mice, but they also sell the Logitech Ergo M575, which is a great value and very highly rated.

The best choice for Apple fans

If you only buy products with the iconic logo, you’ve got two choices.

Apple Magic Mouse

I’ll be honest, I can’t stand this mouse. I got one free with my iMac back in 2013 and used it for as long as I could. The concept is great. I’m just not physically built in a way that lets me use a mouse this flat. However, this is a love-it-or-hate-it design, and there are a lot of people who love this mouse.

The fact that you can perform gestures on the surface is a great feature and a huge productivity boost. If Apple and Logitech get together and build an ergonomic version of this, I’d buy one tomorrow.

Apple Magic Trackpad

As an Apple fan, this will sound biased, but I think Apple makes the best trackpads by far. While I don’t love working on a laptop keyboard, the size, quality, and features of their trackpads make that part of the experience incredible.

The Apple Magic Trackpad is the same trackpad in a standalone Bluetooth package. I actually use this AND the MX Master 3. The Magic Trackpad lives on the left side of my keyboard. I’m more precise with a standard mouse, but the gesture support makes it a great option when doing photo, video, or audio editing or even just moving between Spaces on the desktop.

The best portable mice

If you travel a lot, it’s nice to have a mouse that doesn’t take up a lot of space but isn’t so small it feels like a toy. You still need to get work done, so here are two choices that might be your new travel companion.

Microsoft Arc

I think this is what Apple should have done with the Magic Mouse. It lays flat when you need to tuck it into your bag but then snaps into a more natural position when you get to work. Oh, and it’s quite a bit cheaper.

Logitech Pebble

The Logitech Pebble is right at that sweet spot for a portable mouse. It’s small enough to fit into your bag but not too small to stop you from being productive.

Final thoughts

If you are a professional bookkeeper, and you’re still using your laptop’s trackpad or the mouse that came bundled with your computer, please treat yourself. In a typical year, you will be working over 2,000 hours. I think you deserve to spend at least $30 to improve your setup. Although I prefer the MX Master, make sure you test out a few to see which one best suits your needs. Hurting your wrists from working in an uncomfortable position for hours at a time can really impact your life. Taking a bit of time now to make the right choice will save you a lot of discomfort in the future.
